Watching all of the Ju-on shorts and films in chronological order today for the first time. I’d seen them all previously, but never in one sitting. The large scope of the story works so well on the smallest budget possible. I do feel justified on being very confused after watching Ju-on: The Grudge years ago, despite everyone raving about it. The backstory is so incredibly important to that film. It’s still frightening, but you really have to see the entire series to even know who most of the characters are. I think that sometimes people pretend to grasp the complexity of certain films even when they don’t, just so that they don’t feel like a jerkwad. Anyway, despite all of the Japanese horror films I’ve seen since, the series is still nearly flawless to me, and an absolute favorite.
